A perfect combination of art, culture, and leisure… discover Barcelona!

The capital of the Catalonia region in Spain, Barcelona is widely known for its architecture, art, and modernist monuments from artists like Gaudí and Picasso. Combining culture, history, beautiful beaches, and incredible cuisine, it becomes a vibrant city that attracts visitors from all over the world.

We chose to stay in a prime location, the Arya Stadium Hotel, which, besides being modern, offers easy access to various tourist spots in the region, as well as metro stations, markets, and restaurants nearby. The rooms are comfortable, the breakfast is delicious, and the staff is very helpful and kind. You can also enjoy the pool, bar, and restaurant.

Less than a half-hour walk from the hotel is Plaça d’Espanya, located at one of the city’s most important intersections. Built for the 1929 International Exposition, it is the second-largest square in the region and a landmark in Barcelona. One of the monuments that stands out is the Venetian Towers, inspired by the city of Venice, Italy. The National Art Museum of Catalonia is also located here, considered one of the best museums in Barcelona with 32,000 square meters and a complete collection of Romanesque art, spanning from the historical period to the 20th century.

At sunset, the most sought-after attraction by tourists is the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. With 3,620 water jets reaching up to 4 meters in height, the fountain presents an exciting spectacle combining choreography with music, lights, colors, and movement, impressing audiences of all ages.

Las Arenas de Barcelona, a shopping mall, sports, and music center, was initially built as a bullring and reconstructed in 2011 by Richard Rogers to become a commercial center. It also sits in the square. In addition to numerous shops, the mall’s rooftop has several restaurants and offers a 360° view of the city.

The most emblematic and visited monument in Barcelona is the great Catholic temple of the Sagrada Familia. Designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, the church is famous for blending Spanish Gothic and modern architectural elements. Despite being under construction for almost 150 years and still unfinished, it is considered the largest church on the planet. Its exterior architecture evokes intense and impressive emotions with its decorative elements and mosaics. There are three entrances, symbolizing angels ascending to heaven through the virtues of love, hope, and faith. The interior is filled with symbols and liturgical references, showcasing Gaudí’s unimaginable creativity and exuberant artistic style.

Another Gaudí landmark sought by tourists is Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera. Built between 1905 and 1907, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other works by Gaudí. Art lovers find it mesmerizing and magnificent, as there are no straight lines in the structure. The rooftop, resembling a lunar dream, is another striking feature.

Casa Batlló, located on the city’s most luxurious avenue, is another popular attraction for tourists. Since Gaudí did not leave explicit explanations for its shapes and colors, the facade is open to many interpretations, one of which is that the balconies are inspired by Venetian masks, and the colorful decoration resembles a shower of confetti. Others believe it draws inspiration from the marine world, with windows, stairs, and colors that evoke the sea and its ecosystem. The visit is unique, as it’s highly interactive, with volumetric projections, soundtracks, immersive spaces, and motion sensors.

Next to Casa Batlló is Casa Lleó Morera, another modernist building, designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The house is considered one of the best modernist works, with contributions from the finest artisans of its time. Its interior is filled with ornamental elements inspired by the sinuous lines of nature.

Another monument worth adding to your itinerary is the Arc de Triomf, designed by architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas. Built in 1888 as the entrance gate to the International Exposition, the brick construction features reliefs representing the allegories of industry, craftsmanship, and commerce, symbolizing the city’s artistic, scientific, and economic progress. Over the years, the gate has served as the finish line for important races and marathons and has hosted major festivals and musical events.

Located by the Mediterranean Sea is Barcelona’s liveliest neighborhood, La Barceloneta, home to the city’s best beach. It’s a great spot for those looking to relax and have fun. The neighborhood preserves its old streets and historical landmarks while blending with modern buildings. It’s filled with cultural spaces, such as the Museum of Catalonia, shops, kiosks, restaurants, and a perfect beachfront for walking.

Continuing along the coast, you’ll find other beautiful beaches, the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, the Aquarium, the Maremagnum shopping center, the Barceloneta Local Market, the cable car offering views of the entire city, and the Casino, a famous landmark shaped like a fish, designed by Frank Gehry.

The buildings hold over 2,000 years of history, from the Roman period to the Middle Ages and Modernism. Some incredible monuments that draw tourists are the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi, built in the 14th century, and the Cathedral of Barcelona, which impresses with its detailed facade, cloister, and magnificent interior. The History Museum of Barcelona preserves various records of how the city originated, including a Roman archaeological site founded around 10 B.C. by Emperor Augustus. Near the museum is Carrer del Bisbe, home to the beautiful suspended bridge connecting two buildings, one of the city’s most picturesque spots.

In Sant Jaume Square, you’ll find the Palace of the Catalonian Government and the City Hall. Nearby, in the neoclassical-style Plaça Reial, you’ll find historical buildings, various events throughout the year, and a range of delightful restaurants. In the heart of the Gothic Quarter, Irati Taverna is an excellent spot to taste Basque cuisine, offering delicious tapas with surprising flavor combinations and impeccable presentation.

On a hill with stunning views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea is Park Güell, the largest in the city, covering about 17,000 hectares (170,000 m²). For those interested in learning more about Gaudí, this is another of his spectacular works. The park represents his naturalist phase in the early 1900s, where he perfected his personal style, inspired by organic forms of nature, vibrant colors, and mosaics. The park uniquely blends the natural environment with architecture, full of symbolism, mysteries, and references to Catalan political ideology and Catholicism. There’s also Gaudí’s house-museum, where he lived for about 20 years, showcasing some of his personal items and works.

For soccer lovers and a great family outing, visiting Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona since 1957, is highly recommended. If you can attend a match, the experience is even more amazing. However, even without a game, the museum offers unforgettable moments with an interactive journey through the team’s past, present, and future, filled with detailed history, trophies, and iconic uniforms.
